Yayoi Kusama at the Whitney this Summer!

This summer, the Whitney presents Yayoi Kusama, known for her use of repitition and vibrant color to manipulate space and, of course, her obsession with pock-a-dots!  Fireflies on the Water, 2002, on display, depicts her fascination with seemingly infinite space. In this piece, she uses lights, mirrors, and water to change the space and immerse the audience into another or unthinkable environment. When I visited Copenhagen last fall, I was able to stand in one of her created hallucinant environments at Louisiana, Museum of Modern Art, short distance from Copenhagen. I absolutely loved the work! I can’t wait to get to the Whitney this summer and refamiliarize myself with the alternate space.

Fireflies on the Water is on display alongside Yayoi Kusama, a retrospective of  the eccentric artist’s work.  With Kusama’s creative drive and clear aesthetic, she works in many different mediums from painting, instillation to performance. For this reason, I believe the retrospective will be eye-openning.
