Last Day of School! Time to get Creative!

Today is the last day of school for public schools in New York City, and the second most exciting event of the school-year (first day of school is number one). Thousands of kids will be walking out of school at 3pm today with a mix of feelings that anyone who has ever attended school knows; there’s pride and disbelief at finishing another year, and sadness at parting from camp-bound, or grandparents-visiting, friends over the summer. Of course there is the powerful ecstasy of freedom, but it is somewhat shadowed by the dampening trepidation of possible boredom, even loneliness. After all, school is a vibrant and exciting social and intellectual environment, and while it can feel tiring in its demands and challenges, its structure can also be comforting- a trellis upon which to grow.

This summer, the Textile Arts Center is offering its first ever program for young teens! Three exciting week-long sessions that focus on weaving, printing with dyes, and sewing+fashion.  The classes are comprised of instruction hours as well as free open studio time. Classes are located in our gorgeous Artists-in-Residence studio space (upstairs at 505 Carroll St.) and allow for students to work in shared spaces within the larger studio space (TAC studio, street-level at 505 Carroll St).

You will be inspired through hands-on art-making, engage in critical thinking, and take part in group critique.  Whether you are here to create portfolio pieces or just for fun, this is a great summer experience. Time to put down that cereal bowl, get off the couch, and get Creative!
