First Natural Dye CSA Pick up

The last two weekends we had the first pick up of dyes from the Sewing Seeds CSA. Each member received marigolds, coreopsis and dahlias from the garden, as well as a generous quantity of plum tree branches and leaves (that we foraged from a fallen branch in a communal garden nearby) and some foraged rhubarb leaves.

Even though all the flowers from this pick-up yield yellows, they will all color the fabric in different shades: orange, brownish, green yellow. Plum leaves, however, yield a beautiful old pink/purple color.

The pick-up was followed by a worksop on natural dyeing, in which CSA members were initiated (or refreshed) in the art of dyeing, including mordanting and extraction. We ended the day with a visit to the garden and some bundle dyeing on a silk scarf.

CSA members —  off to work and be sure to send us photos of the projects you make!

  2. How insanely cool there is a natural dyestuff CSA! Awesome. I am excited to be trying my hand at some of these techniques at the Mattress Factory museum’s Garden Lab in Pittsburgh this fall. So glad to see some of your process as inspiration!

What a great idea. I can’t wait to see the results. Would love to pair this up with nature printing, a technique I was recently introduced to. Please let me know when you have the next CSA pick-up.
