Bundle Dyeing in the CSA Garden

With so many freshly harvested flowers in the garden, we had to try out some bundle dyeing!

All you need is fabric (we’re using silk scarves), a branch, string, and dye stuffs.

With the fabric slightly damp, arrange the petals, flower heads, and dye stuffs into your design.

Fold the fabric in to the width of your branch and begin to roll.  For a watercolor effect, roll loosely, but for crisper impressions of the flowers roll very tightly.

Once everything’s rolled up, use the string to secure the fabric and create more of a design.

Find a good burial spot.  The longer you can keep your bundle in the soil, the more great microbial things can happen.

Just don’t forget to mark your spot!

Sorry – didn’t mean to send it yet!! Does it need to be (gently) washed when it’s all done? And if not, can it be washed at all?

Thanks for sharing this great idea!!
    Sincerely,
    Shelly :)

The time is up to you! At least wait one week, and although critters may get to it, you could go for a couple months to get a deeper color. Once it’s out, gently wash in soapy water, hang to dry, and enjoy!

  4. Make sure you check it from time to time to make sure it is not growing mold! Ieave mine in my compost pile (Central Iowa) upwards of three months, for cotton fabrics, depending how warm and wet the summer is. I have complete instructions on compost dyeing in my book titled Compost Dyeing and Other Fermentation Dyeing Techniques.

Also the tighter you wrap the bundles the better the markings left behind on the fabric.

Thanks for the advice! I think we’ll be able to peek at them this afternoon.

    What are dye stuffs?

    • Brigid

Dye stuffs are generally any materials you can dye with. They’re the matter that can transfer to a color in our bundles.
