Altoon Sultan

I came across Altoon Sultan‘s work on Lena Corwin’s blog, and was immediately intrigued. Posted were a few of her hooked wool pieces. I was happy to find that Altoon is also a painter and photographer — I’m always interested in artists who work in multiple media, keeping them totally separate, but seeing how they all interact.

Born in Brooklyn in 1948, she earned her BFA and MFA from Brooklyn College, and has now ended up in the beautiful countryside in Vermont. Searching around about her, there is not too much information on the web. I’ve had a great time sifting through Altoon’s blog.. I’d love to hear from her more about her connections from weaving to painting, and photography. Why did she start working with fiber? What led her that direction? How do the shapes and lines she creates through her textile drawings relate to the other media for her? Does she prefer one over the other?

  1. Hi Owyn, thanks so much for featuring my work. A new interview with me has just been published, which is a more concise account of my work than what you can find sifting through my blog (though it’s all on there too):
